uctweezer For the life of me I can't remember why instead of seeing them two nights later at the Fillmore (a mile from where I was living at the time), I opted to drive 90+ minutes to Santa Cruz on a Tuesday. My brother was at UCSC at the time, so maybe I spent the night there and took him to the show? Anyway, I don't recall any of the setlist from this show, but I *do* recall Mike remarking how much he enjoyed playing with Leo "after spending 20 years just doing this" -- while doing his patented Mike (in Phish) head bob. I saw LKMG two or three times, and they always put on a ridiculously good show and jammed quite a bit. Leo has said in interviews that he would often get upset with himself for missing a change here and there, but Mike would always encourage him to just roll with it and work off the mistakes (i.e. to continually improvise), and by 2005 their musical chemistry was off the charts. Check out this gig for an example of how amazing they were on this tour:

Anyway, after the show, we were hanging outside the venue, and some Santa Cruz girls were waiting for Mike. Mike came out and the girls told him to meet at the Red Room Cocktail Lounge (a few blocks away), and Mike said "ok sounds good". Leo came out a few minutes later, and because I think I'm funny, I said "Hey Leo a few of us are heading over to Red Room Cocktail Lounge with Mike, want to have a drink?". He smiled and said he was too old for that now, said goodnight, and walked away. We went over to the Red Room and sure enough Mike showed up a few minutes later. He was talking to the girls and a few more fans who were aggressively trying to be his best friend and were asking him about Phish (who at that time were still fresh off of Coventry); he seemed a little annoyed but was a good sport. I didn't want to impose so I let him be, but he did come up to the bar when I was grabbing a beer, and I thanked him for a great show, he thanked me back, asked me my name, and said it was nice to meet me. Really laid back guy. That's the end of my "I met Mike once" story.
